ages and ages ago,
frecklebombfic hosted a self rec meme for podfic that is either original fiction, or can be consumed as original fiction, ie there is no canon context required to understand the story. they recced some of their own podfics, which you should 3000% listen to they are all amazing, and so did a bunch of other people, including me! i meant to crosspost here, and now i finally am [checks notes] eight months later.
of moons, birds and monsters (m/m).
context: rpf characters transplanted to an alternate setting.
tags: actors; actor/ordinary person who's unimpressed by them and treats them like an ordinary person; internalised+externalised homophobia; traumatic minor character death; unhealthy coping strategies. happy to give more detailed content notes.
the trouble with witches (gen).
context: canon divergence. main character: morgana, she's magical, canon treats her horribly. this diverges with her leaving the canon setup and going elsewhere. some references would be enriched by canon knowledge but it isn't necessary.
tags: a woman treated poorly by canon getting the happy ending she deserves; wholesome!! morgana is adopted by a baby dragon!! sher is grumpy about it to start with but she adores him!!; found family if that family is a dragon; no romance.
in our finest year (m/m but mostly gen).
context: rpf characters transplanted to an alternate setting. large ensemble cast but no knowledge of who they are based on is required.
tags: telepaths working for the police; meditations on the ethics thereof; prickly relationships; plotty but character-driven.
the clockwork heart 'verse (m/m).
context: complete au. no canon knowledge required.
tags: cyberpunk au; plotty but character-driven; main relationship is holmes/waston-esque; asshole computer nerd/better socialised asshole.
the twelve labours of sean parker (gen).
context: complete au; large ensemble cast. no canon knowledge required.
tags: the mafia with superpowers; soulbonding related to those powers; very very cool and developed worldbuilding around this; people doing crime against their oppressive overlords; plotty but character-driven; plot-relevant kidnapping; asshole pov character who Does The Right Thing.
indoor fireworks (m/m).
context: rpf characters transplanted to an alternate setting.
tags: sex worker/person who hires that sex worker to pretend to be their partner for an event, and then they like each other for real.
truth is i'm a runaway (m/m).
context: rpf characters transplanted to an alternate setting. sort of an x-men crossover, but all you need to know is there are people with powers called mutants.
tags: person who kills anyone they touch/person with healing powers; a road trip across north america; one character gets sick and the other takes care of them. this one is hard to describe but it's weirdly domestic and very soft.
contact sport (f/f).
context: rpf characters transplanted to an alternate setting. wider ensemble cast referenced but don't appear in the story.
tags: roller derby au; one character has mild injuries and the other helps patch them up; useless lesbians tm; sex in a basement bathroom.
(here it comes) with no warning (m/nb).
context: pre-canon, no canonical events referenced. universe is a space setting where people live in multiple different space stations.
tags: space weirdness; wacky hijinks; i don't know how to describe this one but it definitely stands alone and it's pretty fun.
bird in the hand (f/f).
context: complete au.
tags: porn. an hour of just porn. specifically fisting. very emotions.
love on a deposit of frozen pleistocene (m/m).
context: rpf characters transplanted to an alternate setting. large ensemble cast but no knowledge of who they are based on is required.
tags: arctic researchers; detailed+kinda gruesome medical procedure; feelings about climate change and the earth and the meaningful relationships we accidentally form with others; just a lot of feelings, folks.
sovereignty (m/m).
context: rpf characters transplanted to an alternate setting. large ensemble cast but no knowledge of who they are based on is required.
tags: college hockey au where the team lives in a house together; minor character team player does drag which pulls everyone into that world; joyful discovery of worlds outside your own; a pov character who meets things he does't understand with openness and curiosity; just a really soft story about chosen families and belonging and striving to do better by others and yourself; cross-dressing kink.
the cat who got the whipped cream (nb/f).
context: canon au but also kinda pre-canon - no knowledge of canon plot required. universe is a space setting, sort of science fantasy, with all-powerful robots called divines.
tags: coffee shop meet cute; bodyswapping assassin/disgraced former priestess with magic tech powers; "gay as shit".
go wash your heart in the river (mostly gen, bg f/m).
context: canon setting but a standalone casefic. main characters are sisters with a strained relationship, one of whom is a police officer, and a resurrected man from the american revolution times. they're trying to stop the apocalypse, there's a prophecy, it's a whole thing but it's really mostly irrelevant. canon: i don't know her
tags: the case is a woman murdered by her abusive male partner; plotty casefic; the heart of the story is the sibling relationship, not the romance; magical weirdness and mythology. happy to give more detailed content notes.
it's good to feel you are close to me (multiple relationships: f/f, m/m, f/m)
context: complete au.
tags: university au; characters reading poetry to each other; soft romo nonsense; very dear to my heart.
